Mr. Surovell has been licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1969. He is licensed to practice before all courts in the Commonwealth, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has appeared in each of the foregoing except for the U.S. Supreme Court.

He was appointed to the Fairfax County Consumer Protection Commission from 1972-75 and was Chairman in 1975. Mr. Surovell was appointed and has remained the secretary of the Fairfax County Industrial Development Authority since 1975. He has lectured for the Virginia State Bar, Virginia Trial Lawyer's Association, and local bar associations on family law and legal economics topics. He was also elected to a four-year term on the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section Board of Governors. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Fairfax Bar Association, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and American Association for Justice..

Mr. Surovell's community involvement also includes coaching girl's softball, boys baseball, and boys and girls basketball. Mr. Surovell was a Director of the Fairfax County Legal Aid Society from 1970-75 and President from 1973-75. He is also a Past-President of the Tauxemont Community Association.

Mr. Surovell's practice is mainly devoted to litigation, emphasizing Family Law and Personal Injury representation. He is a strong advocate for his clients and an honest counselor. Mr. Surovell prides himself in being a good listener and a creative problem-solver. He has won five reversals in the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Court of Appeals and has successfully defended trial court victories in the appellate courts. He has won murder acquittal before a jury in recent years, a multi-million dollar jury verdict, has grossed over $11,000,000 in verdicts and settlements in recent years. Mr. Surovell has been recognized by his peers as one of the top domestic relations attorneys in Northern Virginia in the Washingtonian Magazine and has been recognized for over 20 years in The Best Lawyers in America . He has also received Martindale-Hubbell's top rating of AV.
